7 Quick Takes

I was feeling pretty blocked on a post for today, when I discovered the new-to-me meme hosted over at Conversion Diary. Seven little things seems like just the ticket today. So here’s what’s going on in my world, in Seven Quick Takes.

My heels are killing me! As if the healthy amount of running I’ve done this week isn’t trauma enough, I’ve been dancing my tail off at rehearsals for Boston Opera Collaborative’s Orpheus in the Underworld. That happens to be the show that the “can-can” is from, so I’m sure you can imagine how energetic/spastic the choreography is. I’ve been spending all my evenings standing and dancing for hours in ballet slippers on a hardwood floor.

My adventures in “gluten-lite” are proceeding apace. I have a sneaking suspicion that the gluten-free cinnamon Chex are laced with crack, which has kept me from going hungry to say the least. For the last three days or so the only wheat products I’ve had are the chunks in my Ben & Jerry’s Half-Baked froyo. In other news, I’ve been reminded why I don’t keep Ben and Jerry’s in the house.

I have been writing like crazy: my own posts, some guest posts, and even the first thousand words of a mystery novel that I pretty much wrote on a dare. I don’t think I’d make much of a novelist because I can’t come up with plot. So all I did was set the scene, and now I’m waiting for the person who dared me to come up with something exciting to happen next.

The organ recital I went to this week was very moving, as I mentioned a few days ago. My parents always tell the story of the first time I heard live music, at the Army-Navy Club in Manchester, CT, and I was totally transfixed. I wish there were a picture of a wide-eyed, crazy-haired toddler gaping up at the cover band. I still get shivers when I get to hear live music. It always reminds me that being part of the musical life of the city is a big part of the life that I want.

I am the Liturgical Coordinator for an exciting upcoming event, an International Colloquium on Jesuit Secondary Education. Basically heads of schools from all over the world are meeting for the first time at a worldwide summit, and my job is to organize the liturgies. How cool is that?

Perhaps it’s anathema for a blogger to say this, but I feel like I’ve been spending way too much time in front of my laptop.

I went out on a limb today and practiced in my apartment. I am always terrified I’ll be disturbing someone with my scales and arias and (as my father would say) howling. But I need to perfect my music for Orpheus, and I’m working on two new arias, so I need to practice whenever I can. For the curious, the arias are The Jewel Song from Faust and The Telephone Aria from The Telephone.
